"OUR HEALTH MATTERS" COMMUNITY HEALTH EXPO DRAWS RECORD NUMBERS
(Denver, CO) -- The second annual "Our Health Matters" Community Health Expo was held on Saturday, October 6 at Rachel B. Noel Middle School with triple the number of attendees coming out for the 2007 event.
More than 300 families and individuals attended the free Expo, which addressed health and safety issues affecting the residents of Montbello and Green Valley Ranch in addition to issues surrounding financial health.
“We went from a handful of people attending last year’s event to hundreds this year,” Kelly Voorhees of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said. “The increased numbers of exhibitors, screenings and the addition of financial wellness seminars made all of the difference, along with having basic information available about health that concern everyone. We can’t wait until next year.”
In addition to free workshops on topics such as protection from sexually-transmitted diseases and hepatitis, proper nutrition and diet, eating disorders, body development, and teen pregnancy, exhibitors offered diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, as well as information about the dangers of tobacco use and second-hand smoke, personal finances and foreclosure prevention.
Denver City Council President Michael Hancock welcomed the families who attended, most of whom are his constituents.
"It is important that we, in District 11, take the lead in confronting the issues that disproportionately affect our neighborhoods," he said.
"Montbello and Green Valley Ranch families are hit hardest in the city when it comes to some of these issues that affect our health and well-being, so it is important and encouraging that you’re all here.”

METRO TAXI “GOES GREEN” WITH HYBRIDS
Company introduces new Prius taxis at May 30 press conference
(Denver, CO) — On Wed., May 30, Metro Taxi Inc., Denver's largest taxi service, became the first such company in the city to convert a number of its fleet to hybrids. Metro Taxi will introduce two of its new vehicles — specially designed Toyota Prius Hybrids — on Wed., May 30, during an 11 a.m. press conference at the company’s headquarters at 5909 E. 38th Avenue in Denver.
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and City Councilman Michael Hancock attended the launch and were the first two passengers in the hybrid taxis.
“Metro Taxi is setting the stage for others to follow with this major step,” says Mayor Hickenlooper. “Hopefully, other companies will follow suit and join Metro Taxi in being good corporate neighbors who are sensitive to our city’s environmental needs.”
Metro Taxi will add three additional hybrid taxis to the fleet on Friday, June 1, then gather customer feedback and real-world mileage data to evaluate the new cars’ performance. During the course of the trial period, Metro Taxi estimates annual savings of 5,090 gallons of gasoline per vehicle.
“Our goal is to replace all of the taxis in our current fleet of 500 with hybrids by 2010,” says Metro Taxi Owner Bill Cotter. “We’re eager to support Mayor Hickenlooper’s Greenprint Denver efforts to improve the environment.”
